Classy Oscars, My Classmates, and Classless, Clueless Politics
February 26, 2009

Wasn’t that a terrific, classy Oscar broadcast?  The best I have ever seen.

I’ve always thought, “If they want the show to move faster, move the audience closer to the stage!”  They did this year, and it certainly cut lots of “down time.”  So many other touches were wonderful:  Queen Latifah’s performance during the In Memoriam section; presenting the acting awards as tributes to all five nominees from five former winners.

I’m never a fan of production numbers, and this year was no exception – though they were less embarrassing then in years past.

I jumped out of my chair more than once, as almost all my choices won!  And with the miracle of TiVo, I was able to zip through commercials, so it didn’t feel like a long show at all.

Speaking of modern miracles, have YOU signed up to Facebook yet?  I resisted for a long time, but T.J. Lee finally convinced me a little less than a year ago.  I’ve avoided the “addiction” so many have described.  But I do sign on at least once a day!  It’s a great tool for staying in touch and networking, communicating, supporting great causes, meeting others who love the things you do, and promoting your work, in my case Carved in Stone.

And a wonderful way to find friends long-lost!

Just a few weeks ago, I became friends with a classmate from high school.  Then another.   And now, more than a dozen!    I didn’t particularly enjoy high school, to put it mildly, and skipped the two class reunions since graduation.  But now, to hear from so many – I’ve pulled out the senior class yearbook and have been reliving memories long forgotten.

These days, I’m constantly thinking about the Great Depression, wondering if people felt then how we feel now in the United States of Angst.  I believe, in the future, we’ll look back and see this mess is as bad, or worse, than the 1930s when, as Quentin Crisp says, “the sky was dark with millionaires throwing themselves out of windows.”  We’re nowhere near the end of this mess, and it’ll get worse before improvement begins.  But thank god the Stimulus Package finally passed, with no help from the Republicans.

Speaking of Republicans:  Screw ‘em.  I admire Obama’s attempts to compromise with Republicans in passing the bill – even if I didn’t like some of the changes themselves.  The fact the GOP still voted straight down party lines is infuriating.

They’ve shown their true colors – they have no interest in compromise or working together.  Being “right” is more important to them than the state of our union.  Their only objectives are trashing Obama, demeaning his policies before they have begun, insinuating Obama ‘s citizen, and denying their idiotic policies almost ruined this country.  Pathetic.

If they want to win back some of mainstream America, a good start would be to send Rush Limbaugh to the moon, and revoke FOX News’ FCC license!  To wish failure on our President, especially during these perilous times?  Hannity conducting a poll on his site, asking which method of revolution his listeners would prefer (succession? armed revolt? A coup?)???  WTF?

What’s that word that shrill stick insect/need bag/magpie/bitch/media whore Ann Coulter loves to toss about with abandon?  Oh, yeah.  Treason.

Enough!  I wish Obama would stop trying to compromise, and use the Democratic Congress, steamroll things through and make the changes he wants.  Did Republicans ever try to work with us when they held the reins?   No.  And look at where we are.  They had their chance, and they fucked it up beyond belief.  Obama gave them an opportunity to work together, and they snubbed their noses.

When I have friends who don’t learn from their mistakes, never take good advice, and make the same errors over and over, I eventually ignore them.  We need to do that now with the Republicans, at least for the time being, until they get their act together.  It’s our turn, and it’s imperative to fix things, now, without playing partisan politics or repeating dysfunctional behavior.
